17TH PAN AMERICAN GAMES
THE CHALLENGE
The challenge for Cirque du Soleil is to design and produce a large-scale opening ceremony for the biggest sporting event in Canadian history, capable of uniting 41 nations and celebrating the cultural diversity of the Americas. The goal is to create a unique artistic and athletic spectacle at the heart of the Rogers Center, while reflecting Toronto’s multicultural identity and conveying a universal message of unity that resonates far beyond the Games.
The ceremony is designed for two audiences at once: the 50,000 spectators in the stadium and the 2 million viewers watching live on television. This dual audience requires a visual and narrative design where each sequence works as well in the expansive stadium as it does through the camera lens.

THE SOLUTION

Built on an idealistic narrative inspired by the setbacks and victories encountered on the way to achieving a dream, the show immerses the audience in a sensory journey through the cultures and peoples of the continent, from North to South, from ocean to ocean. It highlights the rich history of Canada, from its colonial origins to its modernity, while paying tribute to the First Nations, a tribute that extends into the scenography, where every element of the set is rooted in indigenous beliefs and symbols, making the stage itself a living, meaningful territory.
To bring this vision to life, the Rogers Centre is entirely reimagined as a large-scale performance venue, combining immersive scenography, spectacular acrobatics, and state-of-the-art lighting and video technology. Home to the first retractable roof in stadium history and deeply embedded in Toronto's sporting identity, this iconic stadium provides a setting worthy of the scale of the Games.
